Medical Therapeutic Massage - ...can be the alternative to pain, medication, and surgery

About the therapist

Dee Wartenberg, BS, NCTM, NRT  Dee, Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage, has over ten years of experience.  Referrals from clients, doctors, and other professionals continue to sustain this successful, friendly, and very effective adjunct to medical treatment.

One of her very first clients set the stage for this career of helping people back to health. A man, who literally was hit by a bus and was told that he could never work again, had found his way to Dee. Through the use of Dr. Travell’s trigger point therapy, deep tissue release, and some healing time, this client was climbing ladders and back to nearly a full recovery. Both Dee and the client were amazed at the speed and completeness of this physical come-back that the medical community was incapable of facilitating.  Surely, no medication would have substituted!

This incredible scenario of rehabilitation beyond what the medical community provided has recurred time and time again. Dee attributes this to taking the time to do a complete assessment and addressing all of the systems in the body that were affected.

About the service

Medical Therapeutic Massage uses a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system (brain, spinal column and nerves).

This Neuromuscular Therapy is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homeostatic balance.

There are five principles to Neuromuscular Therapy:

1. Postural Distortion-Postural Distortion or muscular contraction occurs when there is an imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting from movement of the body off structural balance; the coronal divides the body into front and rear sections, midsagital divides the body into right and left halves, and the horizontal planes divides the body into a superior (or upper) and an inferior (or lower) section. When the body tries to compensate in an effort maintain structural balance, muscle contraction, body distortion, and pain result. For example, lower limb-length inequality can cause a tilted pelvis, which usually results in a compensatory scoliosis that is maintained by sustained muscular effort.

2. Biomechanical Dysfunctions- Biomechanical Dysfunctions are an imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns. Repetitive strain of certain soft tissue result in adapted movement patterns that become muscular habits and must be reeducated.

3. Trigger Points- Trigger Points occur when nerves fire rapid impulses into an area of the body other than that which has been traumatized. Because of trigger points, the cause of serious pain may often be far from the actual site of the pain. This, in turn, inhibits proper blood flow, causing ischemia (see below) which often leads to more pain and discomfort.

4. Nerve Compression/Entrapment-Nerve Compression and Entrapment is caused by pressure on a nerve by bone, cartilage or soft tissue. The role of the soft tissues in nerve compression is vital. Failure to treat the associated soft tissue is treating the symptom without eliminating the cause of the pain. Nerve entrapment is the most common type of pain and always causes ischemia (see below). Ignored, it can produce associated trigger points (see above).

5. Ischemia- is a lack of blood supply to the soft tissues, which causes them to be very sensitive touch.
